2/ First, why this matters so much. Put simply, much of America’s built environment — the most critical parts, like bridges, the electrical grid, the buildings in which we live — was built in the 60s and 70s. Trillions of dollars of steel and concrete is entering middle age. Surfside’s collapse is but the most infamous example.
