What we have here is a battle for the top of the pyramid of the overall capitalist ruling system between two cliques of power: The "neoliberal" wing that focuses on "diversity" and openness to bring people of color and secular/more openminded folk into the system of profit accumulation; and The White Christian Nationalist/Fundamentalist wing who prefer a much more austere and brutal form of accumulating their profits. There is some degree of overlap, but that is the main fault line.
