I'm facing the dreaded 2 factor authentication on GitHub. The instructions span many pages. I'm supposed to install a TOTP app, which costs $20 per year. When I scan the QR code it asks me to "Choose a password to add this verification code" and shows me a list that doesn't include GitHub. Why can't I opt out from it? I don't store any commercial secrets on my GitHub.
