Where I find WP helpful is with some of the very flexible WYSIWYG themes I’ve used that saved me a ton of customizing time and get it launched and looking good within the theme elements I selected. Still, you’re right, but depending on your project, there may be merit. Building a website, maybe a time saver. Building an application? Likely a no go.
