Why hasn't Spanish been subdivided like Latin? It seems like nobody speaks at high register so I have to decide which regional dialect to learn, and that kinda defeats the main point of trying to learn it. I spend a few hours listening and writing, and then go talk to people irl and get hit with "¿Que lo que?" "¿Mande?" Just call it Mexican or whatever. It's not the same language at all.

I've never had this problem with Italian and I spoke to a wide variety of locals. The genoese spoke just as clearly as the florentine and the venetians. Southerners were a bit harder but not nearly as different as, say, the Mexicans vs Colombians vs Argentinians.
