So what is the ideal we should be aiming for? That ideal is one server per user. That seems like a crazy high bar, but at least we should aim for it, because in terms of UX, that in fact is the ideal for everyone involved. This requires making self-hosting extremely inexpensive. That means #Mastodon is a big no-go. It's way too resource intensive.
