In Facebook's early days, you could only sign up with an invite or a university email domain
Perhaps for nostr we need a similar idea, you don't need an invite, you just need one follow
Or a nip05 from a trusted domain
These are forms of proof of work that a GPU can't do

Still think people are overthinking this, one time pay for relay access should be enough, spammers could pay for a few npubs but after being banned from the relay they would not spend money again.
