Outdoor spaces without any insects (especially ants) in warm weather are creepy. I legit get an uncanny feeling wondering What Was Done to make this little park, yard, or garden so barren.
Do not ask "how do I get rid of bugs?" instead consider "which bugs would I prefer?"
(the answer to the question is: Ants.)
Petite Bass
My neighborhood is nearly bug free this summer. More than creepy, it is frightening.
I have a wall of scarlet runner beans in bloom, thousands of flowers...and about a dozen beans pollinated and set.

If someone has a bunch of flowers in neat little rows but no bugs I'm standing there like "What is the point??"

Some people were happy to not have the bugs. I was terrified because I knew it wasn’t right. Now I’m in LA where there are plenty... show more
Petite Bass we have been steadily turning most of our yard into meadow for the last five years, and the diversity of bugs that we get as part of that is absolutely wild (including plenty of ants).
Petite Bass yep. Was at a local wetland preserve yesterday, in NB, Canada. There were ducks, and a couple of other birds.
The insects we encountered were mosquitoes, a few caterpillars, and some bees on the flowers. That was it.
Very disturbing.
