"lacking in innovation"
If I may butt in, that's an interesting point. Yes, there's been a few, shall we say episodes*, but I think most of them were variations on people having their stuff moved outside of what they perceived to be the fediverse they joined?
I see plenty of innovation with third party apps, non-Mastodon platforms, and even Mastodon has some neat things coming in the next release and on the roadmap.

And there are some good third party tools for managing lists, finding more accounts to follow, etc.
There are also some, to me, more esoteric projects like activitypods.org, work is being done on nomadic identity.
Just curious if there's anything specific you're missing?
