In the small podunk town I grew up in, most major stores were, at least, an hour drive away. Road improvements and speed limit changes have changed this, but in my youth it was pretty terrible. Knowing that most people wouldn't drive an hour to buy things cheaper, local retailers tended to price gouge $20-40.

I wanted to buy a new pair of shoes when I was in high school and pointed out to the retailer that, hey, I could buy them for $20 cheaper at the mall. He laughed at me and told me to go to the mall then. Now, Amazon will provide goods for cheaper and deliver them straight to my door and the local retailers who are struggling to compete cry "shop local". Fuck them. I hope their kids starve.
