Recently read there was a bit of conspiracy around that. Apparently base 60 lends itself to a lot more nice proportions since it's so divisible. But the powers that be feared the masses would come to understand compound interest too well should they internalize the beauty of base 60, thus it was concealed. *I have not verified any of this
