Some have been shouting it from the rooftops for months, but now even Ezra Klein is saying it: the emergency is here. By refusing to bring back Kilmar Ábrego García from the prisons of El Salvador, even when the Supreme Court says to do it, Trump is saying: "hey, you in the USA. I can lock you up, outside the reach of reach of the law, and nobody can stop me". He's publicly said that he wants to be able to do this to US citizens. This is meant to terrify us into submission.
