There's a conflict often perceived as existing between Free Software and Open Source. What I think people are actually seeing is the conflict between two styles of community-building, the volunteer-driven one motivated by fun and doing good, and the foundation-driven one motivated by the salaries paid to Community Managers and PR people. Because it's these people's job, it's much more serious (bringing in HR practices etc) and this erodes the fun for the volunteer-driven types.

Tasteless Harrier do you think focusing on how governance *actually* operates in a project (both implicitly and explicitly) can be a helpful way of working with those differences? Or is that a killjoy too?
