There are several different approaches, including NIP 17 DMs which exist in several clients, relay-based groups (see chachi.chat and groups.nip29.com), relays-as-groups (see flotilla.social), and nostr-over-MLS for nuclear grade privacy (see whitenoise: github.com/parres-hq/whitenoise). I'm working on flotilla and would be happy to help you set something up if you're looking to do that.
